Fall 2016 – Classics 253 Topography and Monuments of Rome
This course took a Digital Humanities approach to examining the city of Rome and its topography and monuments. In this course, I made use of 3D modeling tools like SketchUp to produce models of temples based off of 2D plans and drawings found in reference works and accurately placed them on maps to develop a “thick map” that contrasts present and past.
Additionally, the course culminated in a final project wherein we each made an argument about the city of Rome using the RomeLab virtual world and Augustan Rome 3D model. I argued based on the sightlines evident from these models for a particular location for the Tarpeian Rock, a now-eroded portion of the Capitoline Hill of great historical significance.
Several of the models I created and the write-up for this final project can be downloaded below.
- Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, 3D Model (.skp, SketchUp file)
